  • A computer outage in the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol processing system caused delays at JFK La Guardia and Newark Airport for nearly two hours Monday night

Some travelers arriving or departing San Diego International Airport may have been delayed New Year's Day due to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection glitch.

The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) system temporarily experienced an outage after a "technology disruption" Monday at major airports across the country, according to the federal agency.

Photos posted on social networks by stranded passengers showed long lines at New York's JFK and Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson.

Kennedy Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport also acknowledged there could be passenger delays. DFW International was one of the airports affected.

US Customs and Immigration computers went down at various airports around the US yesterday, causing some havoc for travelers returning from holidays.

All airports are back on line after a temporary outage of #CBP's processing systems.

CBP said it "took immediate action to address the technology disruption". 'At this time, there is no indication the service was malicious in nature'.

During the outage, "alternative procedures" were used to process worldwide passengers, according to the agency. All airports were back on line after wait times for travelers that were longer than usual, it said. Delays were caused because the CBP-controlled passport-processing systems were down.
