Apple admits to slowing down older iPhones

  • Apple admits to slowing down older iPhones

It's a problem a lot of Apple users face - older iPhones seeming to slowing down when newer models and software updates are released. Instead of possibly getting to a point where your old iPhone shuts down to "protect its electronic components" due to the advanced age or low temperature of its battery, Apple is looking to prevent such flaws from ever developing... by preemptively putting a cap on your CPU prowess. However, to prolong battery life and solve issues like the sudden shutdown of iPhone 6 and 6s, Apple might be intentionally slowing the older phones down.

Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices.

"Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions", said Apple. We've now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.

For instance, Todd Haselton at CNBC says Apple should replace iPhone batteries at no charge as to guarantee users a "certain level of performance for the lifetime of a product".

There was an outcry on Twitter over the revelations as users reacted to Apple's statement. Moreover, external factors such as extreme weather conditions can also affect battery life. Apple expects an iPhone to get three years of use, so if you charge your iPhone every night, you might want to get a new battery before its third year of service.

Apple offered trade-ins for some models of the iPhone 6s, but there have been rumblings that it has affected other models, and, as Poole's research shows, the same processor performance degrading happened for him on the iPhone 7 as it did on the 6s.

However, Apple could have handled the information a little better. This fix will also cause users to think, "my phone is slow so I should replace it" not, "my phone is slow so I should replace its battery".

There has always been insane conspiracies about electronic manufacturers deliberately slowing down their old products in order to get consumers to upgrade to their newer products, but as a turns out, this may actually be true - or at least it seems to be for Apple.

Apple did not clarify in its statement whether replacing the batteries, which can be done officially at $79 for those without AppleCare+ warranty program, will help improve performance. So even if Apple's reasoning is accurate, the company looks suspicious by not being upfront and transparent about this particular feature.
