The woman has suffered 50 percent burns and her condition is said to be critical. She was set on fire by Vanga Karthik, 25, who was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Enraged by her decision, Karthik chose to kill her and set her ablaze.

Mourners at funeral proceeding demanded maximum punishment for Karthik. The accused also said that after she rejected him, he didn't wanted her to accept anybody else as well.

Assuring justice, Telangana Minister T. Srinivas Yadav has announced a two-bedroom house in the State's housing project along with monetary help as ex-gratia for the victim's kin. When Rani was on her way home, she was accosted by Karthik, who later set her on fire. They were seen talking for about 10 minutes.

"We attempted to douse the flames with blankets, mud and called for an ambulance. As she asked him not to call her again, the accused poured petrol on her, set her ablaze and fled from the scene", said the DCP.Based on a complaint lodged by victim's mother Savitri, a case was registered.

Stitching together, various narratives of events leading to the immolation points to a grouse the accused bore against Rani, investigators say.

"Karthik had no job for the past year and had been drinking a lot". According to workshop's proprietor, Karthik had referred Rani at his former workplace.


Karthik and Rani worked in the same place where they developed a bond. Jagan Reddy told the police that Karthik was irregular to work and used to use the company money for his personal needs hence removed from work. The accused is unemployed. He had professed love for Sandhya and kept pestering her to marry him, police added.

"On Thursday, Karthik proposed and I refused to marry him".

Police have also collected a cellphone as part of the evidence.

In a shocking incident, a jilted lover burnt a 22-year-old girl with petrol for refusing to marry him.

North Zone DCP B. Sumathi said, "Karthik had worked in the same shop but was later fired for inefficiency".
