3GPP Completes First 5G NR Specification For Release 15

24 December, 2017, 00:47 | Author: Samuel Sharp
  • Here is all we know about the first real 5G specification

Ericsson and Qualcomm, in collaboration with AT&T, NTT Docomo, Orange, SK Telecom, Sprint, Telstra, T-Mobile US, Verizon and Vodafone, showcased 3GPP-compliant 5G NR multi-vendor interoperability during live demonstrations at the Ericsson Lab in Kista, Sweden and the Qualcomm Research lab in New Jersey, US.

3GPP, the telecom industry standards body, has ratified the Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G New Radio (NR) specification, half a year earlier than expected.

The members of the 3GPP now have to approve the specs for Standalone 5G, which will replace the current 4G LTE networks.

This means that 5G standards have been set so that network and radio engineers can all work on a single platform for all 5G devices. After these discussions and filing of the specification of the 5G network, it will be a turning point for the running of 5G as a commercial or personal network of next generation.

The meeting also hints that NSA 5G (Non-Standalone) will be the wireless standard's initial form when it will be firstly launched in 2019. At Qualcomm, we have been developing the building blocks of the 5G air interface for years - investing in early R&D to invent breakthrough wireless technologies that through our fundamental contributions to 3GPP, drove this first 5G NR standard. Qualcomm has already announced support for the new standard and has plans to immediately begin development of future 5G products. The complete and precise information will be released after the finalised standards are published later. At the aforementioned Qualcomm event, the company talked about how 5G would change our lives, essentially removing the speed roadblock that prevent so many of us from getting things done while on-the-go.

As the final days of 2017 draw closer, we achieved a very significant milestone this week in the path to making 5G a commercial reality. With the first standards ready now, the industry expects to start 5G commercial services from 2019.

While the specs themselves won't be announced until next week, they're said to offer support for the full range of low (600MHz, 700MHz), mid-range (3.5GHz) and high-frequency, millimeter wave (50GHz) spectrum. Following this announcement, the schedule acceleration was agreed at the 3GPP RAN Plenary Meeting in Dubrovnik, .
