No fault found in Venus Williams crash

"Based upon this investigation and relevant Florida state statutes, no charges will be filed in this case", reads the assessment of the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, as the local Sun Sentinel newspaper reports.

Williams, the older sister of tennis star Serena Williams, has won seven Grand Slam titles, including five at her favorite tournament, Wimbledon.

Barson and his wife drove into the intersection when the light turned green, hitting Williams' SUV.

Barson's husband, Jerome, was riding in the vehicle with her at the time of the wreck June 9. The tennis star was not injured. "The police report estimates that Ms. Williams was traveling at 5 miles per hour when Mrs. Barson crashed into her. Authorities did not issue Ms. Williams with any citations or traffic violations".

Investigators say video shows Williams had a green light when she entered a busy intersection but a vehicle turned left in front of her, forcing her to stop. "The report is further inaccurate because the video surveillance does not indicate the color of Ms. Williams' light and therefore does not support the police department's conclusion".

Venus Williams won't be charged in deadly car crash

Williams' attorney, Malcolm Cunningham, didn't immediately return an email seeking comment. "I never saw that auto coming", Williams told an officer at the scene.

"You got stuck in a bad situation", he said. "And I'm not 100 percent sure in this case, because you had the right of way but lost the right of way". As she started to cross, a dark sedan had cut her off, forcing her to stop.

The police report stated that, despite having the green light, Linda Barson should have checked the intersection was clear before moving forward.

Jerome Barson was admitted to the hospital with lacerations to his spleen and pelvic and spinal fractures.

The official cause of death was complications involving blunt force trauma because of the accident, the medical examiner ruled. The Barson family attorney said police were wrong and that they would sue Ms Williams.
