Facebook's Facial Recognition Algorithms Have Just Reached a New Level

  • Facebook Facial Recognition Wants to Manage Your Identity

The website will also notify you if someone used your face for their profile picture.

In a Facebook "newsroom" post entitled "Hard Questions: Should I Be Afraid of Face Recognition Technology", Deputy Chief Privacy Officer Rob Sherman compares the new tech to Kodak cameras in 1888. Although this is the first official announcement that the company is moving more intensely towards facial technology - and perhaps farther away from previous forms of individual security as it skews more towards control over one's presence - facial recognition has always been a part of Facebook's platform. Keep it locked for more from Facebook and give us your thoughts in the comments.

However, a Facebook spokesperson in an email told The Register that the Photo Review feature will only search photos from friends and from friends of friends. The new feature is largely an attempt to curb fake accounts and "catfishing", the act of using someone else's identity in an attempt to mislead others.

"You can also look at this as a creepy reminder of exactly how much Facebook knows about you". After switching it on, it will recognize your photos on Facebook and will notify you.

The expansion of this commitment, a feature called Photo Review, triggers a notification to anyone who is part of the audience of a post containing a picture of the individual, regardless of tagging.

Facebook had launched an automatic alt-text tool two years ago, which describes photos to people with vision loss.

Facebook will use facial recognition software to alert users when they appear in other people's photos, even when they are not tagged.

The new features were being rolled out on Facebook everywhere except Canada and the European Union, where face-recognition technology is not employed, according to Candela. This could also prove to be helpful in cases when one person tries to impersonate another or when users fear adding photos of themselves because they're anxious they might end up in the wrong hands or be widely distributed without their permission or knowledge.
