  • Facebook puts toe in music streaming video with UMG deal

Of course, Facebook users could previously create videos with copyrighted music and share them to the network. It's unclear what music will be available to Facebook users or when.

Ever wanted to post a video of you singing Demi Lovato's "You Don't Do It For Me Anymore" or Kanye West's "Heartless" without fearing Facebook removing the video? YouTube signed a similar deal with Warner Music Group, the third major music label, in May. Under the accord, Facebook users will be able to upload Universal's songs and share music through Facebook, Instagram and Oculus virtual-reality technology, the firms said Thursday in a statement. Based on the partnership announced between the music group and YouTube, it sounds as though this agreement is a method to curb financial losses and the new products are a byproduct. YouTube declined to comment on this plans though.

And in August, the company launched Facebook Watch in the United States, a sub-section on the platform that like YouTube offers unique, quirky videos by homebody presenters unlikely to be cast by television executives.

Tamara Hrivnak, Head of Facebook's Music Business Development and Partnerships, said of the deal: "There is a magnetic relationship between music and community building". The video site already has a YouTube Music platform and the advertising-free YouTube Red subscriptions, but it is reportedly looking to set up a more elaborate site on the model of the major, on-demand music services.

Many industry insiders believe that Facebook's brand new venture with Universal Music Group may present a challenge for one of its biggest competitors. The accords establish royalty rates between YouTube and rights holders for professional music videos and user-uploaded clips, and pave the way for YouTube to introduce a new paid music service early next year.
