Android apps must have 64-bit support by August 2019: Google

  • Google to require apps to target recent Android versions 64-bit

A new release on the Google Developer's Blog suggests that the Google will require app developers to design apps keeping in mind Android Oreo's requirements. According to the post, 64-bit code "offers significantly better performance, with additional registers and new instructions". But, it now seems that Google is going the Apple way of implementing the new standard for all the apps.

Lately, people have started to experience a new change in Google Play, where they get video and screenshot previews for certain apps.

Also starting in August 2019, all new apps and updates will be required to have 64-bit binaries. Future Android versions will also restrict apps that don't target a recent API level and adversely impact performance or security.

The requirement for apps to be available as 64-bit software will come into force on the Google Play Store from August 2019. Google will be the one to do this, so developers do not need to do anything to implement this change. By August next year, all new apps will need to target Android Oreo or higher.

"This is to ensure apps are built on the latest APIs optimized for security and performance", Cunningham wrote. In fact, the Cupertino giant kept its word by dropping support for 32-bit apps with the launch of iOS 11.

Google has now laid out clear guidelines for all developers who want to make apps for the Play Store moving forward. For a long time, users had to manually sideload a Prime Video APK if they wished to watch the service's content on their mobile devices. Last week Amazon announced that it would finally bring Google's Chromecast range back to its storefront, while also confirming that talks are now in progress to ensure YouTube will stick around on Fire TV media players. Developers will not have to take any action for this to be implemented to their apps.

Android security depends on secure apps and Google has some big plans.

Android is running on a wide range of devices that are powered by different chipsets. In addition, starting early next year there will be some extra metadata added to APK files to verify their authenticity.
