Al Franken plans to officially leave the U.S. Senate on January 2.

"Let me be clear, I may be resigning my seat but I am not giving up my voice", Franken said in a Senate floor speech earlier this month, announcing his resignation. At least eight women had shared stories of him touching them without consent during photo-opportunities, on a celebrity tour to military installations overseas or at political events.

Franken has denied some of the allegations against him and questioned others.

The shocking allegations against the 66-year-old Minnesota senator prompted several Democrats to call on him to step down. In any case, he said that he couldn't enough speak to his constituents while experiencing the Ethics Committee process, and declared that he would leave "in the coming weeks".

"Some of the allegations against me are simply not true", he said on the Senate floor December 7. "I know who I really am".

Minnesota Gov. Check Dayton, a Democrat, has tapped the state's Democratic lieutenant representative, Tina Smith, to briefly fill Franken's Senate situate once he leaves the chamber.

Smith will keep some of Franken's top staff when she takes office.

Franken said Wednesday he'll give a series of farewell speeches before turning over his Minnesota seat.

"When I leave the Senate in a few weeks, I will continue to try to be an educated citizen and an advocate and an activist", he said.

The senator said he has learned a lot over the last eight and half years in his position and gained new perspective on issues and how decisions are made in Washington.
