  • Amtrak derailment onto the I-5 freeway south of Seattle is 'massive,' police say

The derailment occurred on the first day Amtrak trains began using the new inland route between the Washington cities of Tacoma and Olympia, part of a $181 million project to cut travel time, according to an October news release from the state's transportation department and Amtrak.

Conductor: "We were coming around the corner to take the bridge over I-5 there ... and we went on the ground". "It looks like they're already starting to show up".

The train that derailed Monday during the morning rush hour left the track as it was about to cross over southbound lanes of I-5 near the south end of the bypass.

At least six people were killed by the derailment of an Amtrak train near Tacoma in the U.S. Washington state Monday morning, local authorities said.

More than 100 people were transferred to hospitals in Pierce and Thurston counties, of which four people were considered "level red" patients with the most severe injuries.

There were no additional serious injuries to motorists.

Bova says five vehicles and two semitrailers underneath the train on Interstate 5 were hit when cars came off the tracks from above.

Amtrak train derailed roughly 63 kilometres south of Seattle.

"These are new, upgraded tracks - that's what is so surprising about this", said John Niles with the Coalition for Effective Transportation Alternatives, which joined local elected officials in opposing the project.

"All of a sudden, we felt this rocking and creaking noise, and it felt like we were heading down a hill", Karnes said.

At least three people on board were killed, local authorities said, contradicting a US official briefed on the investigation who said that at least six were dead.

"This specific vehicle on the train derailed minutes after we shot this video".

"Emergency services are on the scene, and Amtrak management is responding". Team will depart DC today. "You just knew when you saw it that something frightful had happened", witness Danae Orlob said. "We will do everything in our power to support our passengers and crew and their families".

But the technology was only expected to be used next year when it is activated on the entire rail corridor, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
