  • A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from newly refurbished Pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Cape Canaveral Florida

Then the company delayed until Friday because it had detected "particles" in the fuel system of the rocket's second stage.

What goes up, must come down, and SpaceX is proving that again and again with their rockets.

Falcon took off from the US Air Force's Cape Canaveral station in Florida at 10:36 local time, according to live footage from NASA's television.

On Dec. 15, at about 10:36 a.m. the Elon Musk-led space exploration company successfully launched almost 4,800 pounds of cargo en route to the International Space Station (ISS) for NASA using the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft, both of which represent the first previously used rockets utilized on a NASA supply mission.

SpaceX director Jessica Jensen says both the rocket and space craft are "flight proven", but the launch pad is brand new.

By recycling this most expensive part of the launcher, the boss of SpaceX Elon Musk intends to reduce launch costs and ultimately make space travel more affordable. Ground controllers will now send commands to begin the robotic installation the spacecraft on the station's Harmony module.

This launch attempt also marks a return to a launch pad damaged when a Falcon 9 rocket and its satellite payload blew up in September 2016.

This was the thirteenth of up to 20 missions to the International Space Station that SpaceX is contracted to fly for NASA.

Carrying about 4,800 pounds of cargo including critical science and research equipment, the Dragon spacecraft will spend a month attached to the space station. The company has already reused boosters for three commercial launches.
