  • US President Donald Trump shakes hands with Russia‚Äôs President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin telephoned U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to thank him for the tip-off, which the Kremlin said helped prevent a militant bomb attack on a cathedral in the Russian city, as well as other sites.

The Kremlin said the Central Intelligence Agency provided Russia with key information about a plot to bomb Kazan Cathedral and other places in St. Petersburg, allowing Russian police to arrest a group of suspects in raids on Friday.

Putin added that his country will also alert the USA if it ever got hold of information regarding a planned terror attack on United States soil. The two leaders agreed that this operation against terrorism "serves as an example of the positive things that can occur when our countries work together". The reports showed the FSB detaining a suspect, who was later shown confessing that he was told by the Islamic State to prepare homemade bombs rigged with shrapnel.

As many as 40,000 fighters travelled from all over the world, including Russian Federation, to join IS in Syria after the 2014 declaration of its self-styled "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq.

Mr Trump said on Friday he had called Mr Putin to thank him for comments he made about the US President's efforts to grow the American economy.

The pair have lavished praise on each other in the past, with commentators describing their cosy relationship as a "bromance".

Sunday's call was the second between Trump and Putin in three days.

But diplomatic ties between Washington and Moscow are still fraught, with both expelling some of each other's diplomats in September and the USA designation last month of Russia's English-language news channel RT as a "foreign agent".

The White House seized on the foiled plot in St. Petersburg as a sign of what Moscow and Washington could do if they cooperate.

Relations between Russian Federation and the USA remain tense. On Thursday, Putin and Trump discussed the crisis in North Korea.
