  • Google Assistant now made compatible with older phones as well as tablets

You might not know it, but Google's Android platform kinda sorta has a teeny-weeny little problem: at any given time, nearly no one has access to exciting new Android features because nearly no one has access to the latest version of Android.

This OS is a toned down version of the latest Android Oreo OS which is now present in high-end devices. A sizeable 26 percent of active Android users are found to continue having Android Lollipop on their devices.

The app description on Play Store states, "Google Maps Go, the lighter version of the original Google Maps app".

Maksim Mukha, Program Manager, Google Assistant said, "We are now adding Android 5.0 Lollipop to the list of devices on which Google Assistant will be available". Users can also search and find information about millions of places, such as phone numbers and addresses. Once you get the Google Assistant update and opt-in, you should see the Assistant app icon in the "All apps" list. However, it'll be available in the "coming weeks" only on English tablets in the U.S., but it's a start.

Earlier this year we first brought the Assistant to Android 6.0 Marshmallow and higher with Google Play Services. Some of these apps like, Files Go and Google Go recently became available to users on the Play Store. It's also rolling out to users in Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil and Korea. Besides devices with 512MB to 1GB of RAM will be able to run the OS.

With a download size less than 5MB, the Google Maps Go is a lightweight version of the main Google Maps app and is basically meant for use with the Android Oreo Go edition. Along with Oreo Go, Google had also announced a slew of lightweight apps. It offers features that are similar to the standard version of the Maps application, but take up less space during installation and less resources while running on these entry-level smartphones.
