Facebook seems to not be running out of things to add to its Messenger built-in camera in order to continually mimic and challenge Snapchat and other similar apps. Unlike the already-present camera filters that let you put on different masks and effects on your selfies, the new additions to the app allow you to throw in a dynamic object that sticks to an augmented plane and gives the impression of intelligently following a predefined path.
To start with, the social media giant is launching a handful of "World Effect" features.
Facebook is trying to close the augmented reality gap with Snapchat with the help of an army of third-party developers.
For regular users, that means they'll soon be able to overlay 3D objects on top of images and videos in their interactions with friends. By opening up its toolkit to developers, Facebook is hoping to take advantage of Snap's reticence to work with third parties.
Facebook Messenger brings AR filters to the app
Users can open the Facebook or Messenger Camera, scroll through the World Effects and tap to add one to what they're seeing. The first set of world effects include a floating heart, an arrow, and a 3D robot and unicorn, as well as word bubbles with predetermined messages like "love", "heart", and "miss you".
Facebook's challenge will be that since it does not have its own operating system to have direct access to the phone's camera like Apple and Google do.
While all the current effects that have been introduced in World Effects are still new and not completely refined yet, we can see more improvements and better usage of AR in the coming updates of the platform. But if Facebook Stories aren't popular to watch, that audience isn't easily accessible. When you move your camera around, the World Effect will stay in the same location.
The real world is too vast for a single company to spice up with augmented reality. That breadth of offering will be key to becoming the default way people explore the AR world.
