United States participation in Pyeongchang Games an open question, Nikki Haley says

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders says the USA "looks forward to participating" in the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

It also mirrors a statement from United States UN Ambassador Nikki Haley earlier in the day.

Sanders said the decision would be made through an inter-agency process, with Trump weighing in on whether the athletes should go to South Korea. "We don't ever fear anything", Haley said. "And certainly that's a ideal opportunity for all of them to go and do something they have worked so hard for".

"What we will do is make sure we are taking every precaution possible to make sure that [U.S. athletes are] safe and to know everything that's going on around them", Haley said Wednesday on "The Story with Martha MacCallum".

North Korea's most recent test at the end of November appeared to show it has the capacity to reach anywhere in the US with a missile.

The 2018 Winter Olympics start February 9, 2018, and are being held in PyeongChang, South Korea, which is roughly 50 miles from the demilitarized zone.

"We have not had any discussions, either internally or with our government partners, about the possibility of not taking teams to the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games", Jones said. "So those are conversations that are happening daily", she said.

It would also leave the Games without two of its largest delegations of athletes, as Russian Federation was banned from Pyeongchang earlier this week for extensive doping allegations.

Worldwide tensions are heating up as the Winter Olympics draw closer.

Speaking in late October, USOC vice president of sport performance Kelly Skinner said, "Every Games environment brings about unique challenges, and we have some tremendous partners in the State Department that can help us prepare".

A spokesperson for NBC, which will broadcast the games in the United States, said the network is monitoring the situation and it now has "no plans to change our preparation for the Games, which are in full swing".

Haley said US officials will monitor activity in the region closely, and determine a way to ensure athletes are protected.

In Pyeongchang, ticket sales have been lagging but Olympic preparations continue unabated.
