Speaking at an event in NY on Monday, the actor, who plays the Duke of Edinburgh in the Netflix drama, said he pities the bride-to-be because "life as she knows it is gone".

"Meghan, from what I can see from the engagement photographs, it doesn't look like she was wearing tights or stockings", Arbiter told Insider.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith attend the screening of "The Crown" at 92nd Street Y on December 4, 2017 in New York City. "Life as she knows it is gone".

The first series of "The Crown" saw Prince Philip resent being forced to stop working as a naval officer when he married Queen Elizabeth, with the royal also depicted as being unhappy with living in his wife's shadow and not being allowed to give his children his surname.

However, Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth on the series, offered up a more cheerful perspective about Markle's fate.

'What's been really exciting, as we talk about this as the transition out of my that the causes that have been very important to me, I can focus even more energy on, ' she said.

Of course, Middleton herself has shared her excitement over Prince Harry's upcoming wedding.

"This would not have been conceivable, this would not have happened 50 years ago", reckoned Foy.

'You realise that as you have access, or a voice that people are willing to listen to, [it comes with] a lot of responsibility, which I take seriously'.
