Sensex gains over 200 points, Nifty reclaims 10100

  • The 30-share Sensex opened on a negative note on across-the-board losses and touched a low of 32,682.52

The broader NSE Nifty closed 0.09 percent lower at 10,118.25 while the benchmark BSE Sensex ended 0.2 percent lower at 32,802.44.

On a closing basis, the wider Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) edged higher by 122.60 points or 1.22 per cent to 10,166.70 points.

Mumbai: The benchmark BSE Sensex fell over 108 points in opening trade following a cautious stance adopted by participants ahead of the RBI policy review amid weak Asian cues.

Market breadth was positive with 1,614 advances against 542 declines. Participants sensed value-buying opportunities after equities' recent lacklustre run, making stock valuations attractive, brokers said.

"Technically, while the Nifty has bounced back smartly, the underlying trend remained down".

The 30-share index was trading lower by 78.86 points or 0.24 per cent at 32,723.58 at 1045hrs.

The index had lost 205 points on Wednesday after the Reserve Bank held the policy rate and raised the inflation forecast for the remainder of the financial year. However, RBI reiterating an economic growth of 6.7 per cent for FY18 uplifted the sentiment. The Indian rupee opened at 64.50 per dollar on Thursday against previous close of 64.52 on Wednesday. Crude prices in the global markets slipped almost 3 per cent on Wednesday, its biggest daily decline in more than two months, after a sharp rise in USA inventories of refined fuel suggested demand may be weakening.

Major losers were SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Ltd, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Steel, ITC Ltd and Wipro.
