Jacobovitz noted this question of what Trump knew/when is also coming at a time when at least one of Trump's lawyers is shifting the president's defense from: He didn't to anything wrong to the more fanciful He can't be charged for doing anything wrong.

"We will be following up with his counsel", Schiff said.

Once it became apparent that she did not have meaningful information about Clinton, Trump seemed to lose interest, Veselnitskaya said, and the meeting petered out.

Donald Trump Jr. invoked attorney-client privilege during his testimony before the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, arguing that because lawyers were present during one of his meetings with his father, President Donald Trump, he could refuse to answer lawmakers' questions about their conversation.

Adam SchiffAdam Bennett SchiffTrump Jr. set for high-stakes interview with House intel panel Comey back in the spotlight after Flynn makes a deal Schiff: Flynn plea "very significant" MORE (D-Calif.) is challenging Trump Jr.'s reasoning, saying Trump Jr. can not apply attorney-client privilege and "shield" lawmakers from this conversation between father and son just because an attorney was present in the room. And whatever was said between father and son after emails concerning the meeting became public would certainly be relevant to understanding the role the president might have played in orchestrating the response to the damaging reports about Trump Jr.'s effort to obtain Clinton "dirt". Trump Jr. helped arrange that meeting after an intermediary promised him the Russian lawyer was in possession of incriminating Kremlin-provided information about Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump Jr was grilled behind closed doors in Congress on Thursday about his contacts with Russian Federation as pressure builds on his father over alleged collusion with Moscow in last year's election.

Veselnitskaya denies ever having such information and wrote in the letter released this week that Trump Jr. misunderstood the goal of the meeting because of Goldstone's "roguish letters" setting it up.

Just days after the meeting, Goldstone apparently forwarded a message to Kaveladze referencing a report about Russia's breach of the Democratic National Committee. Democrats reject Trump's privilege claim.

"In my view there is no attorney-client privilege that protects a discussion between father and son", Schiff told reporters after the closed-door testimony had ended. "So, uh, we intend to persist and make sure we get answers to that question".

Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the top ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said after Wednesday's session that Donald Trump Jr. acknowledged that he had discussed the Trump Tower meeting by telephone with his father on July 10.

The meeting is of keen interest to Special Counsel Robert Mueller and several Senate and House committees that are investigating whether the Trump campaign worked with Russian Federation to interfere in the 2016 election.

It's unclear if Republicans who control the committee will join that push.
