Camera IconRobert Mueller has asked a German bank to look at account information of Donald Trump and his family.

Although limited in detail, the spending report offers the first insight into the scope and scale of Mueller's investigation, which has resulted so far in criminal charges against four people who worked on Trump's presidential campaign.

Interested in Russia Investigation?

Deutsche Bank had been one of Trump's most reliable lenders.

Trump has done billions of dollars' worth of business with Deutsche Bank in the past 20 years; he has previously said that he would consider Mueller looking into his finances beyond any connection to the Russian Federation investigation "a violation". After a string of bankruptcies and broken promises, pretty much every other major bank stopped lending Trump money some years ago. That has indeed been a consistent line from Trump himself, the White House and the president's defenders: nobody did anything wrong, all the contacts with Russians were just routine, and there's nothing to hide.

The subpoena was earlier reported by German daily Handelsblatt.

In addition, the Justice Department has spent $3.5 million to support the investigation, though the special counsel's office says that money would have been spent anyway if Mueller had not been appointed.

Asked if delving into his and his family's finances unrelated to the Russian Federation probe would cross a red line, Trump replied, "I would say yeah".

That last one was just one piece of a broad campaign Trump undertook to hinder the Russian Federation investigation in general and the investigation of Flynn in particular, which reportedly included asking top officials in the intelligence community to pressure the FBI to shut it down and pressing Republican senators to end their own investigation. The one exception was Deutsche Bank, to which Trump owed $364 million as of the end of previous year.

All of those loans were taken out in 2012 and will mature in 2023 and 2024, according to the disclosure.

Deutsche Bank has previously rejected similar demands, citing privacy laws.

Internal Deutsche Bank documents seen by Reuters feature the names of Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his wife, Kathleen, in a series of client profiles.

Lawyers for Manafort did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
