John Conyers retiring from Congress amid sex harassment claims

Democratic Rep. John Conyers resigned from Congress on Tuesday after a almost 53-year career, becoming the first Capitol Hill politician to lose his job in the torrent of sexual misconduct allegations sweeping through the nation's workplaces.
John Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed, has said Conyers' health would be the paramount consideration in whether he decides to step down from his House seat.
"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now". Conyers settled a wrongful dismissal claim in 2015 with a former employee who said he fired her because she said no to his sexual advances. "My legacy will continue through my children", Conyers said.
He is endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in Congress.
But Conyers, who took his MI seat in 1965 and was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, insisted that his record would not be tarnished by the accusations.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had called for Conyers' resignation following Brown's TV appearance, after previously defending him by calling him an "icon". "I hope my retirement will be viewed in the larger perspective of my record of service as I enter a new chapter", the statement from Conyers read.
Conyers first was elected to the U.S. House in 1964.
"His doctor advised him that the rigor of another campaign would be too much for him just in terms of his health", Ian Conyers told the Times. "We support the right to protect the constitutional rights of all involved".
BuzzFeed was the first news outlet to report last week about a settlement Conyers made with a former staffer who had accused him of sexual misconduct.
Conyers has continued to deny the women's accounts, and his lawyer said Conyers would not pay back the settlement money that was paid to Brown at taxpayer expense. Another former staff member accused Conyers of sexual misconduct and filed a lawsuit, but dropped the suit when the court refused to seal the case.
Grubbs came forward as Conyers is expected to speak on a Detroit radio show Tuesday about his future. "This goes with the issue of politics, the game of politics which we're in". Richmond said he had met with Conyers Nov. 28 and had a "very candid conversation about the seriousness of the allegations against him, which he vehemently denies".
"Whatever they are they are not accurate, they are not true, and I think that they are something that I can't explain where they came from", said Rep. Conyers.
Conyers, 88, made the announcement in an interview with a Detroit radio station.
"Seattle's Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who served with Conyers on the House Judiciary Committee, demanded his resignation a week ago, saying there should be "'zero tolerance' for sexual harassment".
Republican congressman Joe Barton separately announced last week he would not seek re-election after a nude photograph of him taken while he was separated from his wife circulated online. Al Franken, D-Minnesota.
Gaddis asked Conyers to clarify what he meant.
"I think that we lose our moral authority if we also don't call out those we love who have done things that are bad", said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash. Another woman alleges she was sacked by Conyers after she rejected his advances and subsequently settled a wrongful dismissal claim with the congressman.
