James Spann: Cold air invades Alabama Tuesday

  • A cold snap is forecast to return to the UK this week

THERE'S GOING TO be no break in the cold weather over the coming days with sleet and snow forecast later this week. That will prevent AccuWeather RealFeelĀ® Temperatures from being significantly lower.

The chance of precipitation Saturday is 100 percent.

It was originally thought that there could be leftover showers on Wednesday, but now it's looking like the rain will clear out with plenty of time before sunrise on Wednesday, so I'm taking away the rain chances of Wednesday.

But forecasters are predicting the mercury will plunge again later this week, with the chance of wintry showers for the Black Country and Staffordshire.

The bitterly cold air gets here by Saturday morning as skies will clear out and strong radiational cooling will occur resulting in low temperatures for the weekend in the mid-20s. Rain will move in Tuesday, with up to half-an-inch possible. The temperature at the surface will be warm enough to keep anything from accumulating. Highs will be generally in the 40s for area along I-20 and to the north, with 50s for the southern counties of the state.

The strong cold front crosses southeast MI between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, and two things will happen immediately: the rain showers end, and temperatures crash. On Friday night a sharp or severe frost will develop with icy patches as temperatures fall to between -3 and 0 degrees.

The beaches and most of the Pee Dee will only get a very cold rain late this week, but our North Carolina counties will get very close to the freezing mark Friday and Saturday morning.

Colder weather is headed to the Decatur area, and it could include light snow or flurries this weekend.

Computer guidance is mixed on the extended forecast, but there are at least some indications that the much-colder weather could last well into mid or late December.
