Ex-Yemeni President Killed by Huthi Rebels

  • Yemen's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh addresses a rally held to mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of his General People's Congress party in Sanaa Yemen

Houthi rebels claim they have gained control of most of Yemen's capital Sanaa, a claim denied by forces loyal to the country's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Saleh announced on Saturday he was ready to turn a "new page" in ties with the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen if it stopped attacks on Yemeni citizens, in a move that could pave the way to end almost three years of war, Reuters reported.

Houthis have recently turned on Saleh, however, and said Monday that they had killed their former ally.

The Houthi-run Masirah TV announced the death of the "leader of the traitors" on Monday, referring to Saleh, who until last week was in a fragile alliance with the rebels.

The former president's gamble in quitting his alliance with the Huthis proved to be a fatal step.

Multiple images and videos of what appeared to be Saleh's dead body were posted to social media sites, though could not be immediately confirmed.

Inside the city, residents said that Houthi fighters seized television studios of Yemen Today, a news channel owned by Saleh, after clashes that damaged the building.

Two of Saleh's associates have confirmed and a third official from the government of Yemen's internationally recognized president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, has also confirmed.

In a televised address, Saleh called for new relations with the Saudi-led coalition, which he and the Houthis have been battling for nearly three years (since March 2015).

In this January 3, 2017 file photo, tribesmen loyal to Houthi rebels chant slogans during a gathering aimed at mobilizing more fighters into battlefronts to fight pro-government forces.

While some sources affiliated to Saudi lead coalition tried to accuse Yemeni popular Committees of Saleh's killing, all facts on the ground shows he has been killed by Saudi mercenaries.

The country descended into a wider civil war that has killed more than 10,000 people while drawing in a Saudi-led military coalition, backed by the United States.

The forces of the former Yemeni president regained control over the cities and areas under the control of the Houthis. He remained in the country, however, and continued to wield political power from behind the scenes.
