Representatives of the 15 member states of the council held emergency meetings earlier this year following an escalating war of words between the USA and North Korea.

"We heartily celebrate the successful test launch of the Hwasong-15 which showed Chosun (North Korea)'s power and greatness to the whole world", read one banner held up by the crowd, referring to the missile.

Tensions have heated up in recent months over the north's continued development of its nuclear and missile programme, in spite of global condemnation and worldwide sanctions.

A day later, a commentary from Pyongyang's Rodong Sinmun newspaper, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, said US-South Korea joint air exercises scheduled for Monday to Friday are a "dangerous provocation" pushing the region "to the brink of a nuclear war".

The country's state media announced the test on Wednesday, hours after leader Kim Jong Un ordered the launch of the Hwasong-15 missile, which reached the highest altitude ever recorded by a North Korean missile. The exercises come after the North fired an intercontinental ballistic missile last Wednesday. The latest test was the highest and longest any North Korean missile had flown, landing in the sea near Japan.

He pushed China to do more, including cutting off North Korean oil imports. The other was the "testing of a long-range ICBM", the implication being this had been achieved with the most recent launch. A minimum of nine votes are needed to win such a vote and China, Russia, the United States, Britain and France can not wield their vetoes.

"We are trying in the Security Council to find a way to make (North Korea) change its policy and that is a role we play here and that is the role that I will be playing as president of the Security Council".

"The situation clearly proves that the USA and the South Korean puppet war maniacs are just aggressors and provocateurs breaking peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula".

Tensions are expected to rise further in the coming week as South Korea and the United States launch a massive air force drill mobilising some 230 aircraft including six US F-22 Raptor stealth jet fighters.

Kim first made the threat in September in response to Trump's United Nations speech threatening to destroy the North and mocking him as "Little Rocket Man".

"We're asking China not to do us or anybody else a favor", he said.

But analysts remain unconvinced that it has mastered the advanced technology to allow the rocket to survive re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere.
