  • Reports: NCAA smacks Ole Miss with additional postseason ban, more scholarship cuts

He's been on the Ole Miss staff for the past 10 seasons.

Needless to say, the school plans to appeal by next week, Bjork said.

The NCAA panel noted that this was the third case in 30 years involving Ole Miss boosters breaking rules, and said that even Freeze told them, "upon coming to MS, he was surprised by the "craziness" of boosters trying to insert themselves into his program".

"We are appealing this case because we were denied proper due course", Ole Miss chancellor Jeff Vitter said. Lewis even testified in front of the NCAA committee on infractions.

Bjork also seemed to address the concerns of some fans and alumni who believe the university did not fight back hard enough against the NCAA investigation.

Bjork added that citing a rules violations case from more than 30 years ago "is not applicable to our current case".

Most debilitating in that regard is an additional bowl-ban season and the loss of 13 scholarships over the next three years.

NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn wrote in an email that Ole Miss has 15 days to notify the appeals committee of its intent to appeal.

Among the penalties, Freeze was given a two-game conference suspension should he be hired before November 30, 2018. The suspension applies only for head-coaching positions; there would be no restrictions if Freeze takes a job as a coordinator or assistant. Ole Miss must also vacate wins that ineligible athletes participated in, which could take some time to sort out.

Fifteen of Ole Miss' 21 alleged infractions are Level I violations, which range from academic fraud to boosters paying prospective recruits. The committee said it reviewed 53,000 pages of information related to the case.

Matt Luke was recently named Ole Miss' head coach after spending the past season as the interim.

Now that Ole Miss has a better idea of its punishment, it can begin the process of rebuilding the program.

Ole Miss went 6-6 this year and beat Mississippi State 31-28 in the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving night.

Every coach mentioned in the Notice of Allegations received a show-cause penalty of some timeframe, including former head football coach Hugh Freeze (one year), former assistant athletic director for high school and junior college relations Barney Farrar and former assistant David Saunders, who worked for former coach Houston Nutt and was most recently at Louisiana-Lafayette (2011-14).
