The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that there has been an natural disaster along the East Coast, which was felt by some people in the New York City area.

The quake previous registered as a magnitude 4.4.

The last natural disaster to hit the mid-Atlantic was in 2011, when a 5.8 magnitude quake hit about 90 miles southwest of Washington, with shaking felt across much of the East Coast including here in New England.

There is no immediate word of any damage associated with the seismic incident.

The natural disaster was given a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 before being downgraded to 4.4 magnitude. Early news about the temblor measured the severity higher, with initial reports of 4.4 and 5.1.

Hundreds of people said they felt it.

"I was sitting in bed watching TV and I felt the bed shaking and it was pretty scary", said Rebecca from Dover.

The U.S. Geological Service reported intensity levels - a different measurement than magnitude - ranging from 3 (weak) to 5 (moderate) throughout Delaware.

Caruso said he didn't expect any significant damage, given the small size of the quake.

USGS Geophysicist Rafael Abreu said the quake could be felt as far at 275 miles from the epicenter.

The quake jolted downtown Dover, sending lawmakers and workers in the statehouse outdoors to see what happened.

Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the USGS's natural disaster information center in Colorado, said he didn't expect any significant damage from the small quake, which he described as unusual. Officers were sent to check the homes, she said.

"What we felt was kinda just a rumble, and I didn't quite know what to make of it and it was loud as well". It's impact included damage to the Washington Monument and National Cathedral in Washington, both of which are still undergoing repairs.
