  • Microsoft plans upgrade for Redmond headquarters

Microsoft hasn't said how much such renovation work will set it back, but it's unlikely going to be cheap as there's nearly certainly going to be some high-end luxury modern design, possibly to stick two fingers up as Apple's "Spaceship" campus in California, particularity when Microsoft says the campus will focus on "inclusive design and accessible technology" to "empower" employees. The software giant will start a multi-year project next fall to create 18 new buildings, alongside new public spaces, transportation investments, and sports fields.

Microsoft announced that it will rebuild its iconic Redmond campus in a project that will take between five and seven years to conclude and will make room for 8,000 new employees. It's also believed that 12 buildings will be knocked down and replaced with 18 buildings instead, many of which are double in height.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), meanwhile, has built over the last decade a dense, a high-rise urban campus that has completely transformed Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, and more recently, the northern edge of downtown.

Microsoft will also construct a foot and cyclist-only bridge across WA-520 that will connect both sides of the campus and tie into the future Redmond Technology Transit Station where Link Light Rail will arrive in 2023.

Microsoft says that the new campus will be more open and less formal. The campus will also have facilities for cricket and soccer, walking and running trails as well as retail space so that its neighbors can also enjoy it.

As our employees create the tools and services of the future workspace for our customers, it's important they have a campus that reflects that future for themselves.

Microsoft's office is getting a makeover. As a Zero Waste Certified campus we will continue to focus further on waste-reduction initiatives. Microsoft said this will foster creativity and innovation.

"This is going to be an extremely intelligent campus, not because of devices but because of infrastructure", says Bill Lee, Microsoft's director of real estate, planning, and development, in the company's post.
