Ghost Ships Wash Up On Japan's West Coast

He promised stern action to respond to what he said were "escalating provocations" by North Korea.

Despite stormy relations between the two countries, the Japanese coastguard occasionally rescues North Korean fishermen in maritime accidents, last week saving three out of 12 North Korean fishermen after their boat capsized in high seas. They were later collected by another North Korean vessel.

Ships believed to have come from North Korea and filled with dead bodies and skeletons have been washing up on the west coast of Japan, as desperate fishermen are forced further and further out to sea in search of a catch.

In late 2015, at least 14 weathered vessels with nearly two dozen bodies reached Japanese shores or were found floating in regional waters.

A total of 43 wooden ships that were believed to have come from the Korean peninsula washed up on Japanese shores or were seen to be drifting off Japan's coast from January to November 22 this year, compared with 66 ships for the whole of last year, the coast guard said.
