Stokes was initially named in England's 16-man squad to tour Australia but was quickly stood down from global duty following his arrest on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm in Bristol in September.

Canterbury earlier confirmed they have had informal talks with Stokes' representatives, but no direct contact with the player himself.

Cumbria's Ben Stokes appears to be on his way to The Ashes after he was spotted at Heathrow Airport.

An image that claimed to show him at the airport began doing the rounds on social media late Monday, sparking speculation that he was flying Down Under to take part in the Ashes.

Canterbury Canterbury's CEO Jeremy Curwin said: "The CCA Board and New Zealand Cricket will independently be considering this issue in the near future but, until then, we are unable to provide any more detail on the status of the deliberations".

Stokes has been given a non-objection certificate by the European Central Bank to play domestic cricket although he remains suspended for England until it is made clear whether or not he will face criminal charges for his role in a late night altercation in September.

In the fallout from the first Test loss, England all-rounder Ben Stokes has boarded a plane from the UK.

"The ECB is aware that Ben Stokes is making a private trip to New Zealand to spend time with his family", the ECB said in a statement.

Stokes, who was born in New Zealand, was given permission to travel on Friday. His travel has not been arranged by the European Central Bank.

But England officials say that's not the case and they're still awaiting a police decision on whether Stokes will be charged over the Bristol incident.
