Background checks for guns purchases set Black Friday record

Last week the Department of Justice ordered a review of the background check system to determine whether law enforcement agencies are properly reporting crimes to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Gun background checks hit a new record this Black Friday, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation receiving over 200,000 new requests amid the busy holiday season.

The actual number of guns is poised to be even higher: gun checks, which are federally mandated for gun purchases, are run on a single buyer and not the individual guns purchased.

The FBI received over 200,000 requests for background checks to own a gun on Black Friday, overtaking last year's single-day record by almost 10%.

A quick search of the NICS database shows the previous single-day record was on Black Friday 2016.

Last Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions directed the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to review the NICS so that guns do not fall into the wrong hands.

According to CNN, firearms dealers were hoping that rebates and deep discounts would lure in customers on Black Friday and boost recently slagging sales.

The number of background checks shouldn't be seen as a precise barometer for sales because one person can buy several firearms with one transaction. Cabela's, a specialty retailer for outdoor recreation sports such as hunting and shooting, rolled out 14 days of rifle, handgun, and ammunition deals in an effort to drum up sales.

Sessions said the November 5 shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, by Devin Kelley, a former Air Force serviceman who had a 2012 conviction for domestic assault, showed that not all the necessary information was being added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS.

USA Today reports there were 203,086 requests on Black Friday this year. Reports that the shooter, a court-martialed Air Force veteran, cleared a background check enabling him to buy his weapon have spurred renewed debate about gun control.

Mr Obama had previously told BBC News that his biggest regret as president was not passing "meaningful" gun reform during his time in office.
