Oxford Circus, the junction of London's Oxford Street and Regent Street, was packed with shoppers seeking to take advantage of "Black Friday" bargains.

Oxford Circus station was closed and people barricaded themselves inside shops amid fears of a possible terror attack.

"We discharged seven patients at the scene and took eight patients to two central London hospitals for minor injuries". "It is vital that we are not complacent - if in doubt it is always best to err on the side of caution and call the police on 999".

Police initially treated the incident as potentially terrorism-related, before standing down.

At the height of the panic, The Daily Mail online posted a story - seemingly based on a 10-day-old tweet - saying witnesses had reported "seeing a truck surrounded by police on a pavement covered with blood".

After an hour, police said they had found no evidence of any weapons or "shots fired" and reopened the station.

Anyone with any information can contact the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 with reference 405 of 24/11.

It is the job of the mainstream media to strike a balance between reflecting what is being reported from the scene without spreading false facts.

Sixteen people were injured following the incident as they ran from Oxford Circus after reports that gunshots were heard on the Central line platform.

As Oxford Circus returned to normal late Friday, Jace Tyrrell, chief executive officer at the New West End Company, said: "This is a very high footfall area and safety and security are number-one priorities for everyone working in the district".

The incident on Oxford Street occurred shortly after dusk, when panic erupted among shoppers. Everybody turned round in sort of pandemonium and started trying to exit the Tube as quickly as possible. I ran out on to the street but it was nearly as if no one knew anything had happened down below.

'Someone said it was a shooting - and people were running away and into buildings.

Officers investigating the incident - which saw hundreds of people break into stampedes, and frenzied reports of a gunman on the loose - now believe it began with the "altercation", which soon escalated into mass panic. People were climbing on top of each other. "More updates to follow", they said.

In a statement, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan praised the city's emergency services for a "swift response".
