Uber reveals hack of 57 million users

The data hack saw the personal data of 57 million Uber drivers and riders stolen and was reportedly covered up by Uber's former chief security officer Joe Sullivan, who paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the stolen data and stay quiet about the entire incident.

Downing Street said the hack, which affected 57m customers and drivers worldwide, had not been reported by the taxi-hailing firm. Uber says that the affected accounts belonging to riders are now monitored and have been additionally updated with extra fraud protection but there's now no official way of finding out if your rider's account has been breached.

Some of the breached data is also from markets outside the US.

You may be asking why we are just talking about this now, a year later.

The stolen data included names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50 million Uber customers as well as the personal information on seven million Uber drivers, including around 600,000 driver's license plates.

Drivers who had their license numbers exposed are being individually notified, with Uber providing them with free credit monitoring and identity theft protection.

Late yesterday a spokesperson for the federal agency told Reuters: "We are aware of press reports describing a breach in late 2016 at Uber and Uber officials' actions after that breach".

By then, company executives had dressed up the breach as a "bug bounty", the practice of paying hackers to test the strength of software security, according to The New York Times.

He added that Uber "did not notify individuals in the UK, the UK Government or UK regulators" at the time the hack was discovered in October previous year.

James Dipple-Johnstone, deputy commissioner of the information watchdog, said: 'Uber's announcement about a concealed data breach last October raises huge concerns around its data protection policies and ethics.

So Uber is likely to have breached state laws by concealing the breach for so long.

"I had the same question, so I immediately asked for a thorough investigation of what happened and how we handled it". We subsequently identified the individuals and obtained assurances that the downloaded data had been destroyed.

While we have not seen evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident, we are monitoring the affected accounts and have flagged them for additional fraud protection.
