  • A study found drinking about three cups a day was linked to a lower likelihood of cardiovascular problems

And - get this - the optimum amount is three or four cups a day.

Higher intake of coffee may prevent liver damage!

Researchers say, "Drinking coffee is more likely to benefit health than harm it".

The full statement from BMJ follows below.

You can feel less guilty reaching for your third espresso shot in the midst of the holiday craziness this season- a recent study has linked that extra cup of coffee (up to six cups daily!) to a decreased risk of of heart failure, stroke and coronary heart disease.

It also found that women at increased risk of fracture should possibly be excluded.

For instance, the health benefits of drinking coffee were not observed in pregnant women. However, when too much caffeine is consumed, it may take a toll on the body. The breadth of the review was pretty substantial; the meta-analyses based on observational research included 67 unique health outcomes, while the meta-analyses based on clinical trials had nine.

Drinking three to four cups of coffee a day can positively impact health more than it can harm it, according to a study published Wednesday.

Researchers compared the results of more than 200 studies and found that drinking coffee could protect against some cancers, heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, and dementia.

A new study which looked at almost 220 studies on this brew found that moderate coffee drinkers are likely to have reduced risk of diseases like cancer, cirrhosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. But liver diseases stood out as having the greatest benefit compared with other conditions.

Finally, there seemed to be beneficial associations between coffee consumption and Parkinson's disease, depression and Alzheimer's disease.

But a year ago the World Health Organisation withdrew its previous warnings on the link between coffee and bladder cancer - and instead said that the drink could, in fact, help protect against certain cancers such as womb cancer and liver cancer. It cited studies on both decaffeinated and regular coffee.
