The United States on Friday expressed deep concerns over the release of banned Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) leader Hafiz Saeed from house arrest in Pakistan.

The JuD is believed to be the front organisation for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) which is responsible for carrying out the 2008 Mumbai attack.

"The Pakistani government should make sure that he is arrested and charged for his crimes", it said in a statement.

A day earlier, India had slammed the release of the JuD chief, whose 300-day house arrest 30-day detention expired on Thursday at midnight.

The United Nations has designated him as a "terrorist" and United States has placed a $10 million bounty on him. Saeed was also designated terrorist under UNSCR 1267 days after the 26/11 attacks in which six American citizens were killed, Nauert said.

Saeed also targeted the Pakistani government for "taking dictation from foreign masters", in a clear reference to the United States, which had put a $10 million bounty on his head.

"You took oath to defend Pakistan and Kashmir, you betrayed the people of Kashmir".

Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed termed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a traitor for seeking friendly ties with India.

It had submitted before the review board that release of Saeed could lead to the imposition of global sanctions on Pakistan.

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued statement rejecting "India's self-serving insinuations" and said its "resolve, actions and successes" in fighting terrorism "is unmatched in the world".

A JuD spokesman said Saeed had "no links with terrorism" and argued that the U.S. comments amounted to interference in Pakistan's internal affairs.

"Saeed has been freed as the Punjab government decided not to detain him further in any other case", a top government official told PTI.

India reacted to Saeed's release with fury, describing it as "an attempt by the Pakistani system to mainstream proscribed terrorists".

Pakistan and India both claim all - but control only a portion of - Kashmir, which occupies the southern foothills and slopes of the Himalayan mountains.

Saeed's four aides were set free in the last week of October. While maintaining that Jammu and Kashmir will always remain an integral part of India, a senior MHA official said India's security forces had given an "appropriate response" to such comments by subversive elements.
