  • Dish Network gets CBS back after brief service blackout

The new agreement, struck Thursday night after marathon negotiations, ended the three-day blackout that began late Monday when CBS walked away from the bargaining table feeling the two sides were not making sufficient progress in the talks.

Dish Network and CBS Corp. say their three-day fight over programming fees is over, and CBS programming is now available for Dish customers.

Dish Network and CBS are involved in a carriage dispute over rights fees, as detailed in the Los Angeles Times. Terms of the multiyear deal were not announced. The Englewood, Colo., satellite television provider, which is grappling with customer attrition, was reluctant to pay a huge premium for a broadcast network that also has faced viewership declines.

Dish customers are not able to view 28 local CBS channels in 18 markets across 26 states.

The agreement includes retransmission consent of CBS, and several other local television stations owned by CBS, on DISH in New York (WCBS and WLNY), Los Angeles (KCBS and KCAL), Chicago (WBBM), Philadelphia (KYW and WPSG), Dallas (KTVT and KTXA), San Francisco (KPIX and KBCW), Atlanta (WUPA), Boston (WBZ and WSBK), Seattle (KSTW), Tampa (WTOG), Detroit (WWJ and WKBD), Minneapolis (WCCO), Miami (WFOR and WBFS), Denver (KCNC), Sacramento (KOVR and KMAX), Pittsburgh (KDKA and WPCW) and Baltimore (WJZ).

That scenario recently played out between CBS and DISH.

Despite the relief that DISH customers will feel of having CBS-owned programmes crossing a number of genres - including CBS Sports Network, Pop, and the Smithsonian Channel - and local providers back on their grids, the agreements arrived too late to broadcast the traditional National Football League game on Thanksgiving Day between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys. However, some customers have likely already switched to the digital over-the-air antenna which saves $10 per month off the DISH bill.

Media companies and pay-TV providers are tussling over how to split revenue from cable and satellite customers as subscriptions drop. That's a dramatic rise from 2010, when the industry experienced just eight blackouts.
