Sounds detected in undersea area where Argentine sub went missing

  • Sailors on missing Argentine submarine have enough oxygen for just two days

More than a dozen boats and planes from Argentina, the United States, Britain, Chile and Brazil have joined the search for the vessel.

Another official said earlier that the submarine reported a battery failure and was returning to base when it went missing Wednesday and lost contact with authorities.

The global search effort for the missing Argentine submarine ARA San Juan will benefit from calm weather this week, and just in time: the sub's supply of breathable air is likely running low, according to the Argentine Navy.

The ARA San Juan disappeared Wednesday in the icy waters of the South Atlantic.

Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi says the "noise" was analyzed and experts determined it did not come from tools being banged against the hull of a submarine as was previously reported by some media. Authorities have mainly been scanning from the sky as storms have halted the maritime hunt.

The submarine was heading from a base in southern Argentina's Tierra del Fuego archipelago to its home port in Mar del Plata. In addition, the U.S. Navy has dispatched high-tech unmanned underwater vehicles to aid in a search of the seafloor, along with two complete sets of subsea rescue equipment capable of bringing the sub's crew back to the surface. They had raised hopes that the crew members were alive.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri met with family members at the base as they waited for news about their loved ones.

His government also sent five psychologists and a psychiatrist to the base in support of the relatives. "We continue to do everything, deploying all available national and worldwide media, to find them as soon as possible".

The calls that were detected "did not correspond to the satellite phone of the submarine San Juan", he said on Monday, adding that the craft had oxygen for seven days. The foul weather over the weekend means that it is unlikely that she could have come close enough to the surface to refresh her air.

On Sunday, search units were largely relying on information gathered from a British polar exploration vessel, the HMS Protector, which was equipped with an underwater search probe and was following the path taken by the submarine, the ARA San Juan.

The ARA San Juan, a German-built diesel-electric vessel, docked in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

That maintenance included the replacement of its four diesel engines and its electric propeller engines, according to specialist publication Jane's Sentinel.
