  • Emmerson Mnangagwa could be sworn in an new president as early as later today or tomorrow

Mugabe, 93, had been expected to resign as a result of last week's military takeover and days of protests against his rule.

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange on Tuesday lost a further 10.36% as the country's parliamentarians set in motion the plan to impeach President Robert Mugabe for being a "source of instability" in the country.

The military took action after the president fired his vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, a hero of Zimbabwe's liberation war, and hinted he would replace Mnangagwa with his wife, Grace Mugabe.

"The people of Zimbabwe have spoken with one voice and it is my appeal to Mugabe that he should take heed of this clarion call by the people of Zimbabwe to resign, so that the country can move forward and preserve his legacy", Mnangagwa said in a statement.

Mass spontaneous street parties broke out on the streets of Harare moments after the news broke.

"Given the events that followed my dismissal I can not trust my life in President Mugabe's hands".

Mugabe's resignation late on Tuesday triggered wide scale celebration and dancing in the streets of Harare. The first lady and former vice president were locked a political battle over who would succeed the aging president, and led competing factions in the ruling party.

"I am very happy with what has happened", said Maria Sabawu, a supporter of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), outside the hotel where the impeachment process was happening.

Mr Mugabe was sacked from his position as party's leader on Sunday.

Mr Mugabe's downfall brings the curtain down on an extraordinary political career.

His sacking of Mr Mnangagwa was seen as a manoeuvre to clear the way for his 52-year-old wife, known as "Gucci Grace" because of her perceived lavish spending on consumer goods, to succeed him.
