Dimitrov overcomes gutsy Goffin to win ATP Finals

  • Grigor Dimitrov bounced back from a set down to beat Jack Sock in the semi-final to set up a showdown in the decider of the ATP Finals against David Goffin who defeated Roger Federer

"I hope that tomorrow he's not going to play the same match".

But Dimitrov will wake up this morning, not only presumably sharing a bed with Nicole Scherzinger but also knowing that he is the No 3 tennis player in the world in the new rankings. Sock began to offload on his seismic forehand though and roared back to snatch the opening set.

The break of serves kept coming as both players traded the next two games before the seventh seed restored a semblance of order to proceedings by holding for a 3-1 lead.

Grigor Dimitrov stood one win away from the biggest title of his career on Saturday after ending his Jack Sock jinx to reach the final of the season-ending ATP Finals at the 02 Arena.

"Now I am feeling exhausted but it was an fantastic week".

But Sock had won their last two meetings having saved match points, most recently at Indian Wells this year, and those demons were lurking for Dimitrov as victory loomed.

They proved costly misses as a backhand skewed just wide put Dimitrov 4-2 clear before a reaction volley, looping lob and whipped backhand soon set up three championship points.

He'd had to change things up after taking only two games off Dimitrov in their round-robin encounter last Wednesday, but his courageous all-or-nothing approach wasn't enough as a late resurgence on his own serve and his encouragement for the crowd failed to save the match. "But in the end, I was really happy about the way I played the match, I was really nervous towards the end of the match", Goffin said in his on court interview after the match.

Play continued with serve, but the early break allowed Goffin to serve for and claim the second set 6-3.

"If I'd have been broken in the last game then tough luck, I would have gone down the other side and played again". He stepped in the court, started being a little more aggressive. Congrats to him and his team for this awesome result, I think he's one of the most improved players throughout the past weeks and months.

Dimitrov held confidently and then broke when Sock mishit a rally ball.

He hit 17 unforced errors in the first set, a lot of them since the second half of the set.

By now, Sock had won more games than Dimitrov had relinquished in his previous two games combined.

But Dimitrov, 26, has only started hitting the high notes this year, winning his first Masters title in Cincinnati in August and now adding what is regarded as the "fifth Grand Slam". He's a very intelligent player.
