  • Congress will start process to make Rahul Gandhi chief on Monday

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has convened a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on November 20 amid indications that Rahul Gandhi may be elevated as Congress President before voting takes place for Gujarat Assembly elections.

Mumbai: NCP chief Sharad Pawar today alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "feared" the "transformed image" of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi due to which the BJP was raking up old issues such as Bofors to "defame" the Gandhi family.

A report in The Indian Express quotes party sources saying that the Mullappally Ramachandran-headed central election authority, which oversees conduct of the organisational polls, has submitted multiple schedules to the Congress president.

The CWC had earlier held a meeting on October 24 to discuss Rahul's elevation, however it sought 15-days to formally announce the decision.

This would clear the decks for the elevation of party vice president Rahul Gandhi to take over as the next chief. The date of organisational poll is December 8 and counting is on December 11. Though Sonia will step down as party chief, she is not expected to withdraw from politics altogether with some sections in the Congress seeing her playing a role in negotiations and coordination with non-NDA parties.

After which, as per reports, the Congress president and party vice-president were asked to file their reply to the plea on July 22. While he is unlikely to sideline party seniors- though there is unease among the veterans over what the transition will mean for them- younger leaders associated with him are likely to gain prominence.

The CWC can also expect to look in the Gujarat elections but it would be peripheral.
