Tesla unveils its electric 'semi' truck, and adds a roadster

  • Tesla's new electric semi-truck

Tusk says the new version of the Roadster will be, "the fastest production vehicle ever made, period".

Thanks to four independent drive trains, the Semi should be capable of accelerating from zero to 60 miles per hour in 20 seconds with an 80,000-pound load. Each of the truck's wheels is powered by a Model 3 engine, and the cab of the truck itself boasts two of touch screens also found in the Model 3.

Tesla shares are up 51.46% this year. Even if you're in the truck and you have a medical emergency, the truck will actually stay in the lane and gradually come to a halt.

Tesla revealed an all-new version of its Roadster sports vehicle that can go from a stop to 60 miles an hour in 1.9 seconds, a figure that would make it the fastest-accelerating production auto ever.

"Reserving Tesla trucks marks an important step in our efforts to implement industry-changing technology", J.B. Hunt President and CEO John Roberts said in a news release.

Tesla said it is a safer truck as well. Instead, they showed a truck with a dramatically greater range. "The supply for their existing Model 3 production is already showing signs of stress so adding larger products in a completely separate market will add strain to Tesla's resources". And so is a startup called Nikola Motor, which just so happens to be the first name of the famed inventor that Tesla is named after. "It's just big. It's super-easy to drive".

Musk hopes his truck will eventually replace diesel lorries on the road.

Musk said Tesla will guarantee the big rigs will not break down for a million miles because they have will have multiple motors. As for jackknifing, Musk said it will be "impossible" thanks to the Semi's independent motors offering vehicle stability assist.

Could this be the electric truck the world has been waiting for?

Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader, said the challenge for Tesla now will be keeping its promises, especially when it comes to potential truck buyers.

Shares of the electric vehicle maker rose almost 3% in opening trading Friday after the company rolled out Tesla Semi, an electric-powered big rig truck with a 500-mile range.

Tesla says there will be a host of fleet management tools and routing tools, which will be made available on the Semi, and are otherwise seen on cars. "So far that final element has eluded Tesla Motors, which makes it hard to see these vehicles as more than "what if" concept cars".

Long-haul semi trucks, on the other hand, would be expected to go greater distances, and that would be challenging.

Just when Tesla's product event looked like it was over, the electric-car maker pulled one of Apple's "one more thing" surprise announcements.
