Second Lib proposes same-sex marriage bill

  • The marriage debate is about nothing more or less than whether fellow human beings can be allowed equality says Bill Hoffman

Senator Paterson said his bill would also include provision for people who were not religious to object to being involved in a same-sex marriage, if it went against their beliefs.

This legislation echoes fears voiced by the "no" campaign in Australia, which promoted myths that same-sex marriage would lead to "compulsory" gay sex education courses as well as cross-dressing kids.

The Equality Campaign has rejected the marriage equality bill put forward by Senator James Paterson as nothing more than a license to discriminate.

Under Senator Paterson's plan, it would also allow any person or business to refuse to co-operate with the staging of same-sex weddings, protecting them from civil litigation under discrimination laws.

The move has inflamed tensions between the conservatives and moderates in the party and set the stage for a lengthy parliamentary debate over religious freedoms and anti-discrimination laws.

In response to concerns over the controversial Safe Schools program, the bill would also allow parents to pull their children out of classes where they "genuinely believe" their kids are being taught a view of marriage inconsistent with their own. "I don't think their votes should mean we shouldn't have same-sex marriage, but I do think that their freedoms should be protected and I think my bill is a bill that best does that", he said.

Ultimately it was up to parliament to decide which bill was the "vehicle to facilitate" the parliamentary debate.

An Australian Senator has released a rival same-sex marriage bill that could see a number of anti-discrimination laws overturned.

Senator Paterson believes state and federal anti-discrimination laws aren't strong enough.

Before announcing the postal survey, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull pledged that if the result in the postal survey was a yes, then he'd seek to introduce legislation to legalise same-sex marriage by Christmas.

"We do not want a dictatorship of the majority in this country".

"That would be profoundly disrespectful and a rebuke to the people of Australia".

"It was part of the journey in Ireland [during the referendum on marriage equality], the issue of freedom to discriminate against people, but that debate lasted a couple of hours because Irish people remember what those signs look like".

"On social media, people can often be a little more candid".
