  • Boulder's Ball Aerospace, NOAA primed for polar-orbiting satellite launch has been seven years in the planning

The new estimated reset launch window opens tomorrow morning at 1:47 a.m. PST, with the same 66-second window.

According to the National Weather Service, 85% of the data flowing into their weather forecast models come from polar-orbiting satellites like the one that will launch Tuesday.

The spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace and involves a collaboration between NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

JPSS-1 is planned to be placed into a non-geosynchronous polar orbit that will allow for a almost complete coverage of the entire Earth's surfaces twice in each 24-hour period with state-of-the-art instruments that are expected to aid meteorologists and other scientists and researchers to better predict severe weather phenomena such as hurricanes up to seven days ahead of the incident.

"I always love watching these things", said Goff. As Mitch Goldberg, the chief program scientist for JPSS at NASA told Space.com, meteorological catastrophes like hurricanes tend to originate far away from the places they affect. JPSS-1 will allow researchers to monitor changes in the atmosphere in Africa that could cause a hurricane off the coast of Florida, for example.

The JPSS-1 spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Colo.

On July 12, 2016, the first stage of the ULA Delta II rocket was transported to SLC-2 at Vandenberg and positioned on the launch pad.

The new satellite will also deliver critical observations during severe weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards and is created to help improve forecasts three-to-seven days ahead of a severe weather event.

On April 11, 2017, at Vandenberg Air Force Base, a United Launch Alliance Delta II second stage is hoisted into the gantry at Space Launch Complex 2. "JPSS will continue this trend". The series of four JPSS satellites are expected to span 20 years.

The JPSS-1 satellite is scheduled to launch on November 10 at 1:47 a.m. PST from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

According to Space.com, JPSS-1 is meant to build off the work of other NOAA satellites. The next launch attempt will be on Wednesday (Nov. 15) at 4:47 a.m. EST. This interagency effort (JPSS) is the latest generation of USA polar-orbiting, non-geosynchronous environmental satellites.
