Magnitude 7.2 natural disaster strikes near Halabjah, Iraq

A 7.2 magnitude natural disaster jolted the the As-Sulaymaniyah region near the Iraq and Iran border on Sunday. Extensive damage has also been reported in countless villages, which have also seen telecommunication and power outages.

Initial reports said a number of villages have been damaged and a number of people have lost their lives in western town of Qasr-e Shirin.

The temblor was centered 32 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of Halabja, Iraq, and had a depth of 33.9 kilometers (21 miles), the US Geological Survey said.

The city is located in northern Iraq, close the country's eastern border with Iran.

Many residents in Baghdad rushed out of houses and tall buildings in panic.


Witnesses said buildings being evacuated as they shook violently. "But then I heard everyone around me screaming 'Earthquake!'"

The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency reported that at least 14 provinces had been impacted by the natural disaster.

Health officials said most of the wounded were in Darbandikhan, 75 kilometres (47 miles) east of the major city of Sulaimaniyah in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

It struck the area of Azgaleh in Kermanshah province at around 21:48 local time on Sunday.

"Without a doubt", he said, there would likely be serious damage and possible casualties.
