Target's Fidget Spinners Could Be Poisoning Kids

The US Public Interest Research Group has found that certain fidget spinners being sold at Target contain high levels of lead. CoPIRG says Target and Bulls i Toy defend their inaction by pointing to the Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) declaration that fidget spinners are NOT technically "children's products" subject to legal limits for lead.

The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass tested at 33,000 parts per million for lead - some 300 times the 100 parts per million allowable for children's toys. The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal, meanwhile, contained 1,300 ppm of lead in the center circle, and 520 ppm in its arm.

A Target spokesperson Lee Henderson said that the CPSC also views spinners as "general use products" and not "toys" so that is another loophole.

"As a result, the fidget spinners identified are not regulated as toys or children's products and are not required to meet children's product standards", she said, per CBS News.

Fidget spinners have been marketed as a therapeutic tool to help stop "fidgeting" and maintain focus; they have even been banned in some schools because they have become a distraction in classrooms.

But now a consumer advocacy group says two types of fidget spinners being sold at Target could be risky. So, while one of their fidget spinners may be marketed to "14 and up" kids, it doesn't mean anything if they're being sold alongside LEGO playsets and Barbie dolls. On Target's website, the "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Bass" is recommended for ages 14 and over, as well as, 6 and over.

Exposure to children is damaging because it can impact development, and any amount of lead in a child's blood is unsafe. Furthermore, per Business Insider the products are sold alongside kids toys.

"Target's VP of corporate responsibility told BI that the two fidget spinners are ".clearly marked on the package "appropriate for customer's 14 and older" and are not marketed to children".

PIRG Education Fund is calling for the toys to be pulled from stores and for a recall to be issued.
