Marshall sponsored a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage and also introduced a bathroom bill this year created to require transgenders to use the bathroom corresponding to their biological sex rather than the sex they identify with.

The race was one of the year's most high profile and drew national and worldwide attention and big money to the northern Virginian district. "This is about the people of the 13thDistrict disregarding fear tactics, disregarding phobias. where we celebrate you because of who you are, not despite it".

During the campaign, Marshall refused to use Roem's correct pronouns.

She started pursuing therapy to begin her gender transition when she was 28, and said in an interview with The Associated Press during the campaign that politics should be inclusive of all.

Roem, a Democrat, defeated Republican incumbent Bob Marshall who proposed a bill restricting which bathrooms transgender people could use and attempted to block Virginia from adding sex and gender discrimination to anti-discrimination rules.

Roem also focused on jobs and schools during her campaign.

"For 26 years I've been proud to fight for you, and fight for our future".

Roem raised $500,000 in donations, much of it coming from LGBT advocates and other supporters across the country, out raising Marshall 3-1, the Washington Post reported. "We shouldn't just be pigeonholed into the idea that we're just going to be fighting about bathrooms".

"Thank you Hoboken. I look forward to being your Mayor!" "If anybody thinks I was joking about that, they're about to be annoyed for the next two years as I constantly persist". "Our great Commonwealth has had many significant electoral firsts, and it's no surprise the diverse and welcoming citizens of Prince William County have chosen to elect the first transgender candidate to any state's legislative body".

With 19 out of 20 precincts in the state's 13th district reporting, Roem had won comfortably with 54.6% of the vote.

While cultural issues may have defined national coverage of the race, for numerous voters, casting a vote meant sending a far more mundane message, and Roem's victory is just the prelude to years of grinding through the state bureaucracy.
