Iranians hold rallies to mark US Embassy takeover

Thousands of people marched in the streets of Iran on Saturday (November 4) to mark the anniversary of the 1979 seizure of the USA embassy, with turnout apparently higher than in recent years when former president Barack Obama pursued detente with Tehran.

Demonstrators held anti-U.S. and anti-Israel signs and chanted slogans, including "Down With the United States", condemning Washington's policies toward Iran.

According to reports, some marchers held signs featuring derogatory caricatures of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On November 4, 1979, a group of Iranian university students took over the USA diplomatic mission, which they believed had turned into a centre of espionage aimed at overthrowing the then-nascent Islamic Republic. The U.S. cut its diplomatic relations with Iran after the embassy takeover and has had no diplomatic relations since.

Shamkhani also noted that the countries that have supported the US's anti-Iran stance over the past years were themselves at a loss.

"And when a missile is tested thousands of kilometers away, after (issuing empty) threats, all their president does is put out a tweet", he said in an apparent reference to North Korea's missile tests.

Turnout for the annual Iranian street rallies that commemorate the embassy takeover, a pivotal event of the Islamic Revolution, appeared higher this year, than when Barack Obama pursued detente with Tehran.

In a recent remark, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Washington Iran's "number one enemy", accusing it of "bullying" over the deal and "holding grudges" against "a tireless and resilient nation".

Given that the JCPOA a win-win deal, Salehi said, Iran is trying to keep it alive and all the parties involved need to be committed to their obligations; it is in the interest of NPT too, since if JCPOA does not work, not only the NPT, but also any other global treaty will lose its credibility.

"Amano is trying to inform the worldwide community of Iran's obligations, he came to Tehran on his own request and consulted with Iranian officials on the wrong positions of the United States", he noted.

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the country's Supreme National Security Council, addressed the crowd on Saturday, saying Iran will make any sanctions imposed by the United States "ineffective", even as Washington targets Iran's economic, nuclear and defensive power. "The enmity with America will continue and our resistance will as well".

"Giving in to the United States will make it impudent; the only way is to resist", Khamenei said.
