Giants defense a no-show in 51-17 loss to Rams

  • The success of the Rams hinges on the performance of Jared Goff

Less than three minutes into the first quarter, Aaron Donald broke into the Giants' backfield, sacked Manning and forced a fumble that the Rams recovered near midfield. The Rams threw a quick wide receiver screen to Robert Woods, who dashed through the middle of the defense for a 52-yard touchdown catch-and-run.

They record a second in the fourth quarter when Manning hit tight end Evan Engram with a 10-yard jump ball that saw the rookie impressively secure possession and get both feet in bounds.

After a long road trip that saw stops in Jacksonville, London and NY, the Rams will return home to Los Angeles next Sunday where they will host the Houston Texans at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum at 1:05PM PST. It turned a 10-7 lead into a 10-point advantage and NY never looked the same in seeing its seven-game winning streak against the Rams end. They scored 30 or more points just 5 times between 2014-16. The first came on a Gurley one-yard run to cap a seven-play, 75-yard drive to open the second half.

The win was the fifth in six games for the Rams, whose 6-2 start is the franchise's best since 2001, when the club went 14-2 in the regular season and eventually lost to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

The Rams, who are 3-0 on the road this season, are coming off a bye week that was preceded by a thorough 33-0 thrashing of Arizona in which Jared Goff threw for a touchdown and ran for another.

On Sunday, in the middle of their third long trip in a four-week stretch, the Rams turned the mood at MetLife Stadium grayer than the sky that hovered above it. He followed that with a nine-yard run to set the Rams up well in the red zone. Running back Todd Gurley has run for at least 100 yards in each of his last two games and in four of his last five games.

At that point, the Rams were up 48-10. The Rams will be back at home at the Coliseum for the first time in over a month next week to play the Texans. Eli Manning needs to throw for 186 yards to become the seventh quarterback in National Football League history with 50,000 career passing yards.
