US President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded death penalty for Uzbek immigrant Sayfullo Saipov after he killed eight people in a truck attack in NY.

In an early morning tweet, Trump wrote that he "would love" to sent the suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, to the military-run detention site at Guantanamo, but lamented it might take "longer than going through the Federal system".

The attacker in the recent attack has been identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, an immigrant who came to the United States in 2010. "There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the awful crime he committed".

The government could choose to seek the death penalty against Saipov as the charge relating to the attack itself - violence and destruction of motor vehicles causing the deaths of eight people - would make him eligible for capital punishment if found guilty.

The president, asked by reporters on Wednesday if he would consider sending the suspect to the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention center, said: "I certainly would consider that", adding: "Send him to Gitmo, I would certainly consider that, yes".

The charges against Saipov, 29, came just a day after the attack near the World Trade Center killed eight people. But the Justice Department last week opted to send a man accused of playing an instrumental role in the 2012 Benghazi attacks to federal court in Washington to face charges - not Guantanamo.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it had located another Uzbek man, Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, 32, as a person of interest in the attack.

Mary McCord, who oversaw the Justice Department's National Security Division before her departure in April, said she hoped Trump and Sessions were beginning to recognize the long and successful track record of federal terrorism prosecutors.

"I promise you that how we treat Mr. Saipov in this judicial process will say a lot more about us than it will say about him", Patton said. They say the Islamic State group's online calls to action spurred Saipov to launch the attack in lower Manhattan on Halloween.

"I would certainly consider that", said Trump at the start of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

"Terrorists should know: This administration will use all lawful tools at our disposal, including prosecution in Article III courts and at Guantanamo Bay", Sessions' prepared speech in NY said.

The US president has shared his views on the possible punishment for the NY attack perpetrator.

Of the hundreds of detainees held at Guantanamo since the September 11, 2001, attacks on NY and Washington, just eight have been convicted in military trials or admitted guilt by plea bargains, according to Human Rights watch.

"The folks in that unit working with the (New York Police Department) and the (Joint Terrorism Task Force) have a long and unblemished track record of successfully investigating and prosecuting domestic and worldwide terrorists", Kim said.

No one arrested in the United States has ever been sent to Guantanamo Bay, and the last time a person arrested overseas was sent there was in 2008.

It said in its weekly issue of al-Naba newspaper that "the attacker is one of the caliphate soldiers".
