RUSSIA INVESTIGATION - Identity of Papadopoulos contacts confirmed

  • Reports: Iowa's Clovis urged Trump foreign policy adviser to meet with Russians

Donald Trump's presidential campaign agreed to a pre-election meeting with representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to an email sent by campaign aide George Papadopoulos.

PPP notes the poll was "mostly" conducted after the news of indictments against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates.

Former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos' guilty plea for making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation brings the conversation surrounding Justice Department Robert Mueller's probe into actions taken during the campaign.

The White House had braced over the weekend for an indictment of Manafort and for allegations of financial misconduct that it could dismiss as unrelated to the campaign or administration.

The extent of the contacts is substantial.

"I would infer from that that he was working proactively on behalf of the prosecutors, which would mean going out and obtaining evidence", said former Justice Department prosecutor Peter Zeidenberg.

Trump has denounced the investigations as a witch hunt.

Mifsud is a professor and honorary director of the London Academy of Diplomacy.

Still, the email casts more doubt on the Trump's team's claim that they had no interest in a meeting with Putin's office.

Although Mifsud is not mentioned by name in the documents, he has since admitted that the "professor" does refer to himself.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes welcomed former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page on Monday night by offering "congratulations on not being indicted". She has not yet been identified publicly.

Asked about a pending announcement of his foreign policy team, Trump listed Papadopoulos as one of five advisers. Clovis told Papadopoulos to "make the trip, if it is feasible".

The U.S. code establishing the undersecretary position says he or she should be selected from "among distinguished scientists with specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics". Papadopolous said he should appear on ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos because their names sounded similar. Papadopoulos also deleted a Facebook post about his travels, the documents said.

Clovis "always vigorously opposed any Russian trip for Donald Trump and/or the campaign", Clovis' attorney, Victoria Toensing, said in a statement Monday to the Washington Post.

Papadopoulos, who was based in London at the time, did not attend them all, but he did attend a dinner meeting of the advisers in late June at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, along with Sessions.

Trump released a photo of the meeting on social media.

However, the former member of Trump's national security team described the idea of a foreign policy advisory board for Trump as "fake news" because the candidate rarely listened to his advisers.

Papadopoulos, who had no formal responsibilities, communicated most with Clovis and Manafort, according to an official involved with the group who was unauthorized to disclose internal campaign activities.
