Qualcomm Sues Apple As Their Ongoing Legal Battle Continues

  • Apple looking beyond Qualcomm for smartphone components

Qualcomm Inc. has sued Apple Inc., accusing the iPhone maker of failing to abide by the terms of a software license and said it may have used its unprecedented access to that code to help Qualcomm-rival Intel Corp. Qualcomm has countered that Apple, one of its largest customers, has lied to regulators in an unfair attempt to bully it into charging less.

The lawsuit also claims Apple did little to stop the valuable Qualcomm information from being shared with Apple engineers who were working with Intel.

In January, around the same time Apple sued Qualcomm, a Qualcomm shareholder filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, demanding compensation for a fall in share prices that he blamed on the way Qualcomm's management has handled its anti-trust controversies. Apple requested that its contract manufacturers withhold royalties to Qualcomm until the dispute is resolved.

The latest lawsuit, which was filed in California state court, comes days after Bloomberg had reported that Apple is designing the latest iPhones and iPads without Qualcomm parts.

Apple sued Qualcomm in January 2017 for almost $1 billion, claiming that Qualcomm had "unfairly insisted on charging royalties for technologies they have nothing to do with".

Perhaps not coincidentally, Qualcomm's lawsuit follows hot on the heels of a report that Apple is considering to drop its modems entirely.

Apple in the past used only Qualcomm modem chips for iPhones, but started also procuring the chips from Intel for its iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models previous year. In a Reuters reports, sources confirm that this is the case and that the devices that will not feature any of Qualcomm's components will be released as early as 2018.
