There were two "confirmed deceased adult males" and one woman transported to a hospital, the Thornton Police Department said on Twitter about two hours after first reporting the incident.
Smith said he and other customers had trouble getting the door to open as they tried to get out of the store.
They say there has been a shooting with multiple injuries. "Active crime scene. We will update as info becomes available", the police department said in a tweet.
Police first reported that gunshots had been fired around 6 p.m. Wednesday night. Authorities used security video to help identify him.
The shooting appears random and there are no indications that it was an act of terror, said Thornton police spokesman Victor Avila.
He says the motive is unknown.
